Prosodic planning in speech production

چکیده

Theories of language production need to account for how speakers produce prosodic structure. Very few models have addressed the role of prosodic phrasing in speech planning, and little experimental work examining this question has been conducted so far. Four studies designed to investigate the effect of phrase length and prosodic phrasing on speech planning are presented. The first experiment examines the effect of prosodic structural complexity on pause duration using very long phrases (28 syllables). In a second experiment the effect of prosodic structural complexity using phrases of different length (6, 10, 14 syllables) is investigated. Experiment 3 examines the effect of prosodic complexity when the utterances are strings of numbers and Experiment 4 examines local and distant effects of prosodic phrase length on pause duration. The results show that speakers have a large scope of planning and that both local and distant prosodic phrases have an effect on the speech planning process. It is argued that prosodic structure determines the chunk to be planned by speakers. Implications for models of speech production are discussed.

Effects of compatible versus competing rhythmic grouping on errors and timing variability in speech.

In typical speech words are grouped into prosodic constituents. This study investigates how such grouping interacts with segmental sequencing patterns in the production of repetitive word sequences. We experimentally manipulated grouping behavior using a rhythmic repetition task to elicit speech for perceptual and acoustic analysis to test the hypothesis that prosodic structure and patterns of ...

Prosodic Structure in Child Speech Planning and Production

English-speaking children have acquired phrasefinal lengthening by the age of 2, but other aspects of prosodic organization appear to be later acquired. This study investigated 2-year-olds’ prosodic organization of function words in an elicited imitation task. In particular, we wanted to know if children would prosodify pronouns 1) as part of a trochaic foot with the preceding word, or 2) as a ...

Utterance preparation and Stress Clash: Planning prosodic alternations

Abstract: Models of speech planning and production allow for the prosodic structure of an utterance to be only partially built when the utterance is produced. Previous studies have found evidence that higher-level prosodic units exert a stronger influence in relatively prepared speech compared to unprepared speech. A related issue is whether prosodic alternations are likewise influenced by prep...
